Adventures With Morganna

Our day was filled with hunger.
Bernhard and I continued our pursuit of game and again found that there were no animals moving about the land; we had neither beast to hunt nor monster to slay. A few hours before dusk, Bernhard and I approached the small lodge hidden in the western corner of the grove. I wanted nothing to do with the place, I wanted to continue to hunt and seek out game. But there was simply nothing to find, and the other norn must have come to the same conclusion as I had seen no other hunters. I wanted to keep away from my shame, yet Bernhard and I were both starving and the lodge would have food and a proper resting place for us for the evening. Even with the short rest we’d had earlier in the day my body felt drained.
The number of norn children residing within the lodge was staggering, I’d visited this place several times in the past but each time the children seem to double. It’s unusual for this many norn children to be gathered in one place, but many of them belong to a kind couple who have taken the orphaned children in as their own and have a large number of their own children as well.

While I often loathe my mother’s behavior toward me, I forget how fortunate I am to still have her in my life. The life of a norn is filled with conquest and glory, but not everyone can achieve glory and any true norn wishes for a death on the battlefield and this subsequently leaves many orphans untended for. Most norn consider any child to be a great future hunter and a member of the lodge and will look after them like a family member, so even these orphans are cared for. But for so few norn to take on the trouble of rearing so many children is quite a feat.

The kind couple offered me lodging in exchange for labor, they had me cut several large logs into piles of wood. The task was trivial and simple but my body already ached after days of wandering through the wilderness, stalking nothing… After finishing the task, and being berated by children asking me questions and pelting me with the occasional snow ball, I joined the few adults who made this place their homestead for a late meal.

After speaking and eating for a while I learned that an oddly thin woman named Nürd claimed to be a Havroun for the Spirit of Snow Fox. While all norn pay homage to the Spirits of the Wild, worship of Snow Fox is rather uncommon and as far as I know no one has claimed to be a Havroun of any but the four Great Spirits in generations. The other adults were praising Nürd with protecting their lodge and providing them with meat. The other hunters seemed to be faring poorly, like myself, yet Nürd apparently brings back a substantial amount of game every time she goes hunting. This information both intrigued me and angered me, both emotions I tried to subdue but Nürd jested me more than once. Fortunately the jabs seemed to go over the others heads.

I once met an asuran female who told me that, “All norn are simply large backwater bookah with brains lacking in proportion to their stature,” and while I made her into a rather fetching belt, I sometimes have to agree with the statement. My people are not always the most bright, they may be the most spirited yes but not always the brightest bunch. The norn of this lodge have clearly fallen for the stories of this Nürd but I will not fall for her tricks. The lesser spirits have no Havroun, they just don’t.

After some persuading, the lithe norn has agreed to take me with her when she goes hunting tomorrow, and after a good nights rest I will see just how “blessed” this trickster is. I know that the spirit of Snow Fox is supposed to be clever, but no spirit is as clever as Raven.

    Morganna

    Picture
A young norn, Morganna braves the lands of Tyria in search of adventure and triumphs to ensure her immortality in the songs of the norn. She often travels with not but her animal companions, but she has made several useful allies during her journeys and enjoys having company during her otherwise lonely quest.

    Awaiting GW2
This blog is set in the timeline of Guild Wars 2, since this game has yet to be released the updates will be irregular and of fictional adventures designed by me. I'm going to shoot for at least biweekly updates, but expect a much more active blog once the game releases later this year.
